Effect of Sharia Supervisory Board The Characteristics on Maqashid Sharia Index

Abstract

This study aims to find evidence of the Characteristics of the Sharia Supervisory Board on the maqashid sharia index in the Islamic banks in Indonesia. The variables used in this study are the characteristics of the sharia supervisory board and the maqashid sharia index. The indicator of characteristics of sharia supervisory board (SSB) includes number of sharia supervisory board, double positions of sharia supervisory board, number of sharia supervisory board meetings, and educational background of sharia supervisory board. The indicators of the maqashid sharia index include education (tahdzib al fard), justice ('adl), and welfare (maal). This study uses secondary data in the form of annual reports and governance reports from Islamic banks in Indonesia over a period of 5 years (2013-2017). The number of research samples is 11 Islamic banks. This study uses Partial Least Square (PLS) to analyze data. The results of this study found a negative effect of the number and educational background of the shariah supervisory board on the maqashid sharia index.
